Faster assembly times on packaging lines further contribute to cost savings.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith has partnered with BSH Home Appliances Group’s Slovenian unit, BSH Hišni aparati d.o.o. Nazarje, to introduce a fully recyclable, plastic-free packaging solution for Bosch hand mixers, marking a significant step toward sustainable manufacturing.
The newly developed solution replaces expanded polystyrene (EPS) inserts with corrugated cardboard alternatives, aligning with BSH’s sustainability goals of reducing CO₂ emissions, minimizing plastic use, and promoting circular economy practices. The innovation is expected to eliminate up to 340,000 EPS units annually, significantly cutting packaging waste.

Beyond sustainability, the fibre-based inserts offer operational advantages. The universal design supports three different hand mixer models, simplifying inventory management and improving production efficiency. Faster assembly times on packaging lines further contribute to cost savings.
Importantly, the new packaging meets all durability and protection standards, successfully passing transport and drop tests without compromising product safety. It also integrates seamlessly into existing production lines, requiring no additional modifications.
With BSH Nazarje producing up to 170,000 units annually, the initiative underscores growing industry efforts to adopt eco-friendly materials while maintaining performance and efficiency in small home appliance packaging.
