CEPI: Paper and Board Production Plunged in 2022

Almost all paper and board grades, except household and sanitary grades reported decline in production.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) announced publication of preliminary paper statistics for 2022.

According to preliminary figures, paper and board production by CEPI member countries declined by 5.9% during the previous year, mainly impacted by energy prices and slowdown of the European economy during the latter half of the year. The total production touched 84.8 million tonnes in 2022.

Almost all paper and board grades, except household and sanitary grades reported decline in production. The production of packaging paper grades fell by 4.6%. The production of carton board and other packaging board for retail packaging were down by 4.1%. Also, the production of wrapping grades fell by 5.2% year-on-year. Meantime, the output of sanitary and household paper increased by 2.2%, in comparison with 2021.

The production in largest producing countries, such as Canada, Japan, the U.S. and South Korea registered decline in the range between 0.5% and 3.5%.

Meantime, the paper consumption continued to remain stable in these countries in 2022 when compared with 2021, despite EU slowdown. Moreover, the consumption pattern suggest that demand for sanitary and household grades has grown by3.6% in the previous year. On the contrary, the demand for graphic paper recorded marginal decline by 1.8%, mainly due to declining demand from printing and publishing sector.
