According to the corporation, the action is consistent with its previously declared plan to maximize its packaging business. It should be mentioned that the business recently merged its speciality goods and containerboard divisions into a single sector. It is expected that the shutdown will cost about $5 million.
Further to this, the company intends to transfer the facility’s production capacity of 200,000 short tons per year to its other facilities. The company offered to work closely with affected employees during the transition. They could apply to open positions at other locations. Additionally, it will provide job search support to those who don’t want to relocate.
Cascades' executive vice president of packaging, Jean-David Tardif, stated in a news release that while it is a tough choice, it is a necessary component of the company's efforts to maximize the performance of its packaging industry.
