AF&PA: 46 Million Tons of Paper was Recycled in 2023
The group estimates that in 2023, about 33 million tons of cardboard were recycled. This corresponds to almost 90,000 tons of recycling every day. The annual cardboard recycling rate was between 71% and 76%. Compared to the 2023 paper recycling rate of 65%–69%, this is far greater.
Four main sources of cardboard are gathered: commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential. First, the cardboard that has been gathered is sifted, and any non-cardboard is eliminated. Following processing, they are delivered to paper mills where they are turned into new goods like paper bags, toilet paper, and different types of boxes. About half of the recycled paper was used to make containerboard in 2023. Furthermore, the recycled paper is exported to other nations, where it is utilized in the production of new goods.
