Paper Recycling Rate Extended Decline in 2019

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The annual review report published by the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) indicates continued decline in paper recycling in the UK.

The apparent consumption of paper and board registered a decline by 4.5% in 2019, compared with the prior year. The consumption recorded decline from 8.60 million tonnes to 8.21 million tonnes. The domestic demand for recovered papers was more or less stable, posting marginal decline by 0.7%.

The Graphic sector demand declined by 7.7% to 3.08 million tonnes. The newsprint demand fell by 9%, whereas that of all coated and uncoated sectors recorded declines by not less than 5%. The Printing and Writings as well as Tissue sector expressed slowdown during the previous year. The demand for packaging boards including cartonboard fell by 2.5%. The total UK demand was estimated at around 10.82 million.

The total collection of paper and board for recycling registered year-on-year decline by 2.5%, falling from 7.54 million tonnes to 7.35 million tonnes. This is the seventh straight year of decline in collection volumes, said CPI Annual Report.

The exports of paper for recycling from the UK posted a decline of 4.5%, falling from 4.18 million tonnes to 3.99 million tonnes. China continued to be the largest export market destination despite restrictions on imports in that country. The export markets that witnessed significant growth in 2019 were India, Indonesia and Turkey.
