According to ASPAPEL, the production of corrugated box packaging materials surged the most.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Spanish Association of Pulp, Paper and Cardboard Manufacturers (ASPAPEL) announced that the country’s paper and board production posted 1.1% year-on-year growth in the initial four-month period of the current year. The Spanish paper sector contributed to the robust demand for European recovered paper even in the midst of coronavirus pandemic-related uncertainties.

According to ASPAPEL, the production of corrugated box packaging materials surged the most, recording nearly 9% growth over the corresponding four-month period in 2019. The tissue production, which had reported 1.6% jump during the initial quarter of the year, climbed higher by 11.4% in the month of April alone. The cartonboard production in the country was up marginally by 1.2% in Q1 this year.

The Association noted that over 4.4 million tons of paper and board were collected for recycling during the previous year. The Spanish paper collection rate stood at 64.3% in 2019. The country’s paper mills consumed over 5.1 million tons of recovered paper last year, higher by 5.3% from 2018. The country continued to remain as a net importer of recovered fiber. Meantime, the recovered fiber utilization rate by Spanish paper mills surged higher from 71% in 2018 to 75% in 2019.
