SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Paper Excellence announced that it plans to restart the Prince Albert pulp mill at the earliest. The company had originally purchased the mill in 2011. It had recently invested over $600,000 in engineering and consulting works. The restart is scheduled to be immediately after the expiry of the non-compete agreement with the former mill owner in March this year.
In mid-January this year, the company had installed new signs at the mill entrance, signalling its efforts to restart the mill. The engineering works for the new equipment at the site are in progress. Also, it is in the final phase of detailed evaluation of the existing equipment, which will be refurbished. In addition, the company officials are reportedly meeting with government representatives as well as leaders of local indigenous groups on possibilities of related investment opportunities.
Upon full operation, Paper Excellence expects the mill to generate over $300 million in economic benefits for Prince Albert and all of Saskatchewan every year by providing employment to as many as 200 people. The annual capacity of the mill is estimated at around 340,000 tonnes of Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK).
Earlier in December 2020, the company had announced $13 million upgrade plan for Port Alberni paper mill in British Columbia.
