Ogun State Ordered Shutdown of Metal Recycling Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Ogun State Government (OGSG) ordered shutdown of metal recycling business citing industrial pollution.

According to Ola Oresanya, Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, the state government has shut operations of Sagamu-based Maths Metal Recycling Limited for deliberately discharging contaminated oil into environment through holes at the back of its premises. This not only caused health issues to nearby residents, but also resulted in pollution of underground water in the region.

The OGSG had issued several warnings to the business, but was not attended to by it, which finally led to its shutdown.

The authorities noted that the recycling company declined to install retention tanks within its p-remises to treat bad oil and other solvents, but instead discharged contaminated oil to the environment. The action by the company is being categorized as a criminal act that is punishable under the Ogun State Environmental Sanitation Laws. The State would now determine appropriate remedial action, the charges of which will be recovered from the company.

Oresanya warned other industries operating in the state against pollution and other environmental violations.
