OceanaGold Slapped with Large Fine for Violating Environmental Rules

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The multi-tier gold mining company OceanaGold Corporation has been fined by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) for violating environmental rules at its Haile, South Carolina gold mine. The fine amounts to approximately US$100,000.

According to citation issued by the DEHC, the company has been accused of releasing excessive amounts of mercury. Also, the miner failed to submit timely pollution test results and obtain necessary DEHC permit. This is the largest pollution-related penalty for any South Carolina company in more than a year.

Prior to this, the DHEC had cited violations at the mine a couple of times during the previous year. In September 2020, the mine was fined $11,200 for violations including release of thallium. Also, the laboratory facility at the mine was hit with a fine of $16,000 for improper management of hazardous materials.

At the time of commencing mine operations, the company had committed to meet all necessary environmental regulations. However, questions have now been raised regarding the company’s commitment to environmental policies.

Meantime, OceanaGold has reportedly hired an independent third-party to audit the mine’s environmental performance.
