Ocean Recovery Alliance Calls Plastic Waste As The Biggest Challenge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Ocean Recovery Alliance- a pioneer in efforts focused on reducing plastic pollution, called plastic waste as one of the biggest challenges of our time. In a recently held webinar, its founder and managing director Douglas Woodring stated that plastic pollution currently impacts more human beings, even more complicated than climate change.

The effective solution to address the problem is to make the entire plastics industry an active part of the solution. Innovative projects such as the ones that help manufacturers, businesses and municipalities to measure and recognize their plastic footprint must be encouraged. Also, communities should be educated at the grassroots level to tackle plastic pollution at its source itself, he said.

Woodring highlighted the need to develop critical recycling infrastructure and related supply chain to handle plastic, not only in large cities, but also in smaller municipalities.

The environmental impacts created by plastic pollution is enormous, Woodring reminded. As per estimates, nearly 5 billion tons of plastic has littered the planet over the past six decades or so. Around 8 million tons of plastic waste enters the ocean every year. However, the sad part is that only one-tenth of the total plastic is recycled.
