SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Charlotte, North Carolina-headquartered Nucor Corporation announced that the company’s board of directors has approved construction of a new rebar micro mill in the South Atantic region. This will be the company’s third rebar micro mill, after the ones located in Missouri and Florida.
The construction of the mill is mainly based on market forecasts which say that the rebar market is expected to show further strength during the forthcoming years. The U.S. domestic consumption primarily relies on locally produced rebars, as strict trade enforcement measures have resulted in drastic decline in volumes of imported rebars into the country, said the company news release.

The mill, to be built at an investment of $350 million, will have an estimated production capacity of 43,000 tons per annum. Incidentally, Nucor’s total bar steel production capacity is estimated at around 9.5 million tons per year.
Commenting on the development, Leon Topalian, President & Chief Executive Officer, Nucor Corp. said that the company believes that the East Coast market may need additional rebar supply in the coming years, especially with the passage of the infrastructure spending bill by the Biden administration. The new project will help Nucor to maintain its leadership position in the rebar market, he added.
