Elcycon aims to be a key component of the supply chain in the development of offshore wind power infrastructure.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Charlotte, N.C.-headquartered Nucor Corporation announced the launch of a new sustainable heavy gauge steel plate product made specifically for offshore wind energy applications. The new product, named ‘Elcycon’ will be produced at the company's new $1.7 billion state-of-the-art Nucor Brandenburg steel mill in Kentucky, said the company press release.
Elcycon aims to be a key component of the supply chain in the development of offshore wind power infrastructure. The advanced steel product is made using Nucor's recycled scrap-based electric arc furnace manufacturing process. The Thermo-Mechanical Controlled Processing (TMCP) at the new mill ensures that it meets the rigorous quality standards. Moreover, it has larger plate dimensions, improved weldability and superior fracture toughness. Nucor expects to offer Elcycon in a wide range of plate grades and sizes.
Leon Topalian, Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nucor Corporation noted that the launch of Elcycon has led to creation of the first domestic supply chain of sustainable steel for the nation's offshore wind energy industry. Elcyon's larger and thicker plate sizes will help the country become a leader in offshore wind production, he added.
