According to White, copper mining equities are capitalizing on high copper prices while also reaping the rewards of a tightening supply market.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Jacob White, CFA, director of ETF product management at Sprott Asset Management, recently reported a 4.41% surge in spot copper prices for August. His report also showed that the copper mining space saw attractive gains as well. The Nasdaq Sprott Copper Miners Index was up 17.11% across the month of August, and the Nasdaq Sprott Junior Copper Miners Index surged 20.76%.
Advisors and investors may be wondering why copper miners are outperforming spot copper so much right now. According to White, copper mining equities are capitalizing on high copper prices while also reaping the rewards of a tightening supply market.
Copper prices have been rising for a multitude of reasons, including its usefulness in the AI buildout. However, White also pointed out that mine disruptions, lower ore grades, and aging mine operations have left copper supplies struggling to keep up with the growing demand.
“Lower output at several major mines reflected both operational setbacks and persistent challenges at aging mines,” White added. “These supply constraints leave the global market less able to absorb further disruptions as demand from electricity grids, AI data centers and defense programs continues to grow.”
nvestors looking to take advantage of the supply/demand dynamics that copper miners are benefiting from can do so through the ETF wrapper. There are funds available to help portfolios gain targeted access to miners across the copper industry.
Sprott offers multiple ways to access this market. For instance, the Sprott Copper Miners ETF (COPP) offers investment exposure to both copper miners and physical copper itself. This approach can help advisors and investors tap into broad, holistic demand across the copper industry.
Alternatively, the Sprott Junior Copper Miners ETF (COPJ) could provide an attractive growth opportunity. COPJ, true to its name, invests in smaller copper miners. Given how much momentum the copper mining space saw in August, the fund’s growth approach may feel even more compelling than usual.
