Nucor Corporation to Open New Steel Mill in Polk County

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Charlotte, North Carolina-headquartered Nucor Corporation announced opening of its new steel mill in Frostproof, Polk County before the end of the current year. The construction of the plant was initially announced in early 2018. The plant is considered to be Polk County’s largest industrial development in the past 45 years or so.

According to the company, the plant is being built at an investment of around $240 million. The 620,000 square-foot plant will employ a total of 250 employees with an annual average salary of $68,000, significantly higher when compared with Polk’s average annual wage of $41,047.

The latest reports indicate that Nucor has completed 75% of the hiring, which includes plant workers as well as office and other support staff. The technical training for hired operational staff is being provided in Nucor’s other plants across the country. The plant should reach its full employees strength by next year, said Drew Wilcox, vice president and general manager of the plant.

The company had originally planned to open the plant this summer. However, the permitting formalities led to delay in startup of construction activities. The micro-mill will produce steel rebars from scrap steel, mainly for construction industry.
