Nucor Corporation to Build New Galvanizing Lines to Boost Capabilities

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Board of Directors of Charlotte, N.C.-headquartered Nucor Corporation approved construction of two new galvanizing lines, as part of the company’s strategy to expand its capabilities and boost its presence in the automotive and consumer durables markets.

The company press release noted that one of the two galvanizing lines will be constructed at Nucor Steel Berkeley in South Carolina, at an investment of approximately $425 million. The project, expected to be completed by mid-2025, will result in creation of more than 50 full-time jobs. The second galvanizing line will be constructed in the western U.S., with more details expected to be announced in coming days.

The new S.C. galvanizing line will have a capacity of nearly 500,000 tons per annum. It will have capability to produce galvanized steel up to 72 inches wide. The company has been offered job development credits by the State of South Carolina. Berkeley County has been provided with a grant by the SC Department of Commerce Coordinating Council for Economic Development to support site preparation costs for the project. Also, Santee Cooper has approved a grant to the County to help cover the costs of facility upgrades related to the expansion.
