Nucor Announced Plans to Cut Carbon Footprint at its Steel Mills

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Charlotte, North Carolina-based Nucor Corporation announced comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction strategies aimed at significantly reducing the GHG emissions intensity at its steel mills. The company aims to achieve nearly 77% less emissions when compared to global average.

According to the company, its current GHG emissions stand at 0.47 tons of carbon per ton of steel. This compares to the global average of 1.69 and the steel industry average of 2.15. By 2030, it targets to reduce emissions to 0.38 tons of carbon per ton of steel. It aims to additional 35% combined reduction in the Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions intensity by the end of this decade. Furthermore, it plans to achieve significant reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions associated with raw materials.

The company’s strategic actions include active support to the development of new renewable energy sources, so as to ensure transition to a more sustainable, low carbon future. Further to this initiative, the company plans to implement a series of new energy efficient projects, in addition to significant investment in new recycled steel facilities.

Leon Topalian, President & Chief Executive Officer of Nucor noted that it wish to prove that its sustainable steel production strategies plays a key role in helping the world meet its climate goals.
