Nucor Announced $58 Million Upgrades at Nebraska Bar Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Charlotte, N.C.-headquartered Nucor Corporation announced that the company’s Board of Directors has given approval for a project aimed at upgrading the engineered bar mill in Nebraska. The project will equip the mill to better serve the automotive market and meet the rising customer demand.

According to the company press release, it plans to invest approximately $58 million in the proposed modernization project. The enhancements include installation of a new reheat furnace, new intermediate mill, and coil inspection and trimming station. The mill, post upgrade works, is expected to become operational in the final quarter next year.

When completed, the upgrades are expected to boost Nebraska mill’s capability to produce engineered bar and coil products with improved surface quality and reduced decarburization. In addition to ensuring diversification of products, it will also raise safety standards at the facility.

Commenting on the investment, Leon Topalian, President & CEO of Nucor Corporation stated that the upgrades to its engineered bar mill in Nebraska are part of the company’s efforts to continue to grow the number of tons it sells to the automotive market. The investment will reinforce Nucor as a leader in engineered bar and rod, by aligning its product mix with current and future customer demand, he added.
