James Griffin, NSW Environment Minister noted that the ban is the first step in the state’s efforts to save its environment from plastic pollution. Plastics cause serious damage to environment as it remains for several number of years, finally breaking down into microplastics. As a next step, the government plans to prohibit the use of single-use plastic straws, bowls, plates, and cutlery, polystyrene food containers and cups, and personal care products containing plastic starting this November, Griffin said.

The violation of the law could lead to fines of up to $11,000 for sole traders and up to $55,000 for businesses. The law also sets a fine of $110,000 for manufacturers, producers, wholesalers and distributors.

Shoppers will be allowed to bring their own shopping bags. Also, stores could offer alternative bags such as paper bags or heavy-duty plastic bags by collecting a fee from customers.
