North American Crude Steel Output Slumped 5%

The cumulative North American crude steel output during the initial nine months of the current year ended a tad higher than the comparable period in 2018.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The region-wise monthly steel production statistics for the month of September 2019, published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates modest decline in steel output by North American countries.

The North American crude steel production totalled 9.632 million tonnes (Mt) in Sep ‘19, lower by 4.8% when matched with the year before. The regional steel production had totalled 10.117 Mt in September last year.

The U.S. continued to be the largest producer in the region. The US output recorded marginal decline by 2.5% year-on-year from 7.255 Mt to 7.072 Mt. In second place was Mexico with total production of 1.465Mt during the month. The Mexican output dropped significantly by 10.6% when compared with the output of 1.638 Mt in September 2018. Canada-the third largest producer in the region witnessed huge 11% year-on-year decline in output. The monthly output dropped sharply from 1.168 Mt to 1.040 Mt over the year.

The cumulative North American crude steel output during the initial nine months of the current year ended a tad higher than the comparable period in 2018. The cumulative regional output totalled 90.620 Mt, as against the output of 90.379 Mt recorded in Jan-Sep ’18.

All countries except Mexico and Canada recorded increased output in Jan-Sep ’19. The Mexican output was down by 8.2%, whereas the Canadian output dipped by over 5% over the previous year. El Salvador recorded highest year-on-year jump in output of 5.7%. The U.S. output surged higher by 3.2%. Also, Cuba and Guatemala saw 1.0% and .6% jump in steel output over the first nine months in 2018.
