The producer shipments from U.S. and Canadian facilities decreased 6.7% year-to-date through April.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the Aluminum Association's preliminary projections, which were published in its monthly Aluminum Situation data report, the North American region's aluminum demand decreased 4.1% year over year in the first quarter of 2025. The reduction was mostly caused by a decline in ingot shipments and export markets.
Key findings of the report
The report states that the demand for aluminum in the United States and Canada decreased from 6.83 million pounds in Q1 2024 to around 6.53 million pounds through Q1 2025. Meanwhile, the first quarter saw a 40.9% quarter-over-quarter increase in the imports of aluminum and aluminum products into North America, primarily due to increasing imports ahead of the imposition of tariffs.
Through April, producer shipments from establishments in the United States and Canada fell 6.7% year-to-date. The main cause of the loss was the 2.3% contraction in aluminum mill products. According to the data, shipments of aluminum ingot for castings, exports, and destructive uses have decreased by 15.0% so far this year.
Tariff policy-a primary driver
According to the Aluminum Association, tariff policy was the primary driver of scrap inventory's strong 18.9% year-over-year growth in April of this year.
