New Report Highlights the Importance of Boosting Aluminum Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest report published by the European Aluminum states that aluminium recycling contributes significantly to reduction of carbon emissions by the sector. The study focused on the environmental performance of aluminium refining processes used to produce cast alloy aluminium ingots from aluminium scrap.

According to the findings of the study, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the aluminium refining process recorded notable decline by 14% between 2010 and 2018. The environmental impacts of the refining process could be further reduced by 11% by including the benefits related to the recovery of the aluminium oxide from the salt slag recycling process.

The value-added products generated and recovered during the aluminium refining process are consumed by various industries including the aluminium, ceramic and cement industries, the report noted.

Gerd Gotz, Director General, European Aluminum said that the report findings highlight the significance of boosting aluminium recycling in Europe. The exports of around 1 million tonnes of aluminium scrap outside the EU leads to huge loss for the European circular economy. He called upon the European Union to incentivize recycling infrastructure investments and further strengthen state laws that govern transboundary waste shipments.
