New PET Recycling Plant Aims to Restrict Exports of Plastic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A joint venture partnership between Asahi Beverages, Pact Group Holdings and Cleanaway Waste Management will build a new PET recycling plant in Australia. The $32 million plant, which will be located in Albury, New South Wales, is expected to reduce the plastic waste exports out of Australia.

The proposed plant will run on solar energy and will be capable of processing nearly one billion PET bottles per year. The amount of locally sourced and recycled PET produced in the country currently stands at around 30,000 tonnes in a year. This is projected to rise to over 50,000 tonnes per year. The construction is expected to commence by the end of this year, with full operations expected by December 2021. The facility will result in creation of approximately 300 jobs.

The joint venture will capitalize on the collection and sorting network of Cleanaway, and the packaging expertise of Pact Group. Asahi Beverages will buy the recycled plastics to be used in their packaging.

The new partnership aims to ensure that more PET plastics are collected, recycled and reused in new packaging. Further, it will deliver significant boost to the local economy and contribute towards achieving the country’s previously declared 2025 National Packaging Targets.
