New Era Of Sustainable Steel Products to be Driven by Solar Energy

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The increased focus on limiting the recent surge in global temperature has resulted in more steelmakers exploring new technologies towards sustainable steel production. The major steelmakers across the globe are seen using renewable energy such as solar energy in their steelmaking process.

For instance, EVRAZ North America announced that solar energy will power steelmaking operations in its Pueblo, Colorado site. The recently unveiled Bighorn solar project is expected to lead to significant reduction in emissions, making the mill the first in the world to be powered largely by solar energy.

Charlotte, N.C-based Nucor Corporation has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with EDF Renewables North America (EDFR) for 250 megawatts of new solar energy in Texas . The proposed project  will help EDFR to add more clean energy to the region's power grid. The agreement demonstrates the comany's commitment to sustainable steelmaking.

Also, Tata Steel has collaborated with Tata Power in setting up a grid-connected 41MW solar project in India. The project will produce solar power for Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar steelmaking facilities. Earlier in 2017, the two Tata Group companies had commissioned a 3MW photovoltaic power plant at Tata Steel’s Noamundi iron ore mine.
