worldsteel Unveiled Latest Figures for Sustainability Indicators

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) published latest figures for sustainability indicators. The ‘Sustainable Steel- Sustainability Indicators 2021 and Our Sustainable Journey’ also provides an overview of the evolution of sustainability programmes over the past five decades and details about its nine new sustainability principles.

The carbon dioxide emissions per tonne crude steel cast increased from 1.85 in 2019 to 1.89 in 2020. The energy intensity too went higher from 20.06 GJ per tonne crude steel cast in 2019 to 20.62 in 2020. The percentage of materials converted to products and co-products were up from 96.49 to 97.86 over the year. Meantime, the percentage of employees and contractors working in environmental management systems (EMS)-registered production facilities witnessed decline from 97.16 to 96.11.

The steel sector lost time injury frequency rate increased marginally from 0.83 injuries per million hours worked in 2019 to 0.85. The training days per employee surged from 6.90 to 7.18.

The sector companies invested 8.03% of revenue in new products and processes. The distribution of economic value stood at 97.75% of revenue during the previous year.
