The new furnace will help the facility manufacture some of the slabs needed to produce its steel sheet products on its own.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMIttal SA and Nippon Steel announced that it will construct a new electric arc furnace at its U.S. joint venture in Alabama, U.S.A. The new EAF will be built at an investment of $775 million. The new EAF is expected to become operational by H1 2023.
According to joint press release by the JV partners, the furnace will be constructed at their 50:50 joint venture AM/NS Calvert. It will have an annual processing capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes. The furnace will be capable of producing various products including hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel sheets.

The new furnace will help the facility manufacture some of the slabs needed to produce its steel sheet products on its own. This will lead to notable cut in lead time and significant improvement in mill productivity. Currently, the facility produces steel sheets from semi-finished slabs that are procured from domestic as well as overseas suppliers.
Earlier in September, ArcelorMittal had reached an agreement with Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. to sell all of its U.S. assets except AM/NS Calvert. Two weeks back, it had announced completion of the $1.4 billion acquisition. The company aims to concentrate on the Alabama facility to further strengthen its capability of supply of state-of-the-art steel products in the entire North American region.
