The total crude steel production was 1.875 million tonnes (Mt). The major contributor was the Asian region, whose output totalled 1.349 Mt. The Chinese production totalled 996,342 tonnes, which accounted for 74% of the Asian and 53% of the global steel output. It must be noted that world crude steel production had totalled only 1.435 Mt in 2010.

Open hearth furnaces contributed only 0.3% of the total production. Also, the production of hot rolled products totalled 1.756 Mt in 2019, as compared with 1.368 Mt in 2010.

The world exported 439,424 tonnes of semi-finished and finished steel products. Asia and EU-28 were the two largest exporting regions. On the other hands, imports totalled 438,457 tonnes.

The world apparent steel use surged higher from 1.420 Mt in 2010 to 1.889 Mt in 2019. The apparent per capita steel use was 245 tonnes. The yearbook noted that apparent use of finished steel amounted to 1.767 Mt during the previous year.
