New Canada Plastics Pact Targets to Address Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The newly formed Canada Plastics Pact (CPP) announced its commitment to work towards 2025 goal to reduce plastic waste and pollution. The signatories of the Pact comprise 40 partners comprising businesses, NGOs and government agencies. Incidentally, the Pact aims to ensure 30% recycled content in plastic packaging by weight in the country by 2025.

According to CPP, the initiative will ensure collaboration of companies across the Canadian plastics value chain. The group has already carried out significant efforts in reducing plastic pollution. The collaboration noted that partners will be encouraged further to rethink the way they design, use and reuse plastics. The initial focus will be on plastic packaging, since the category accounts for nearly 47% of the total plastic pollution, CPP added.

The plan of action includes defining a list of plastic packaging that is to be designated as problematic or unnecessary, so as to take necessary measures to eliminate them by 2025. Efforts will be made to ensure that at least 50% of the plastic packaging is recycled or composted by 2025. In addition, CPP will boost efforts to design 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

The CPP is part of the Plastics Pact network by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
