Nestle Commits to Make 100% Packaging Recyclable or Reusable by 2025

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Switzerland-headquartered food and beverage major Nestle has announced its commitment to make all of its packaging fully recyclable or reusable by 2025. As per the new vision unveiled by the company yesterday, it aims to ensure that none of its packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfill or as litter. The decision is part of company’s ongoing efforts to develop a circular economy so as to minimize the environmental impacts of food and drinks packaging.

According to Mark Schneider, CEO, Nestle, a collective approach is required to tackle plastic waste, which is cited as one of the biggest sustainability issues faced by modern world. As a responsible industry player, Nestle is committed to development of innovative solutions to promote 3 R’s- Reduce, Re-use and Recycle, he said. The company targets to achieve 100% recyclable or reusable packaging latest by 2025, Schneider added.

In its efforts to achieve the above goal, Nestle will focus on three core areas- eliminate use of non-recyclable plastics; encourage the use of plastics that allow better recycling rates and eliminate or change complex combinations of packaging materials.

Furthermore, the company will continue to play key role in development of efficient collection, sorting and recycling schemes in all the countries that it operates. Also, Nestle will co-ordinate with value chain partners and industry trade groups to explore new packaging solutions in order to reduce usage of plastics. The company will introduce new labels providing proper recycling information to customers. In addition, the company will continue to promote market for recycled plastics.

Earlier, bottling major Coca-Cola, as part of its “World without Waste” campaign, had pledged to recycle a used bottle or can for every one the company sells by 2030. Also, it had pledged to increase the amount of recycled contents in plastic bottles to 50% by 2030.
