SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Mondi- the global leader in packaging and paper announced startup of a new specialty kraft paper machine at its Steti mill in the Czech Republic. The paper machine was installed at an investment of €67 million. This is Europe’s first dedicated paper machine for specialty kraft paper grades from fresh as well as recycled fibre.
The paper machine is capable of producing up to 130,000 tonnes of specialty kraft paper per year. The mill’s product portfolio for consumer shopping bags will be expanded to include recycled paper grades, in addition to white and brown virgin grades. The machine will use recycled and sustainably sourced fresh fibres to produce 100% recyclable two-ply paper, which could be used in multiple applications. The paper produced will have a trim width of 4.4m and a substance range of 70-135g, the company press release said.
Commenting on the milestone development, Kalle Taari, Head of Strategy & Product Management Kraft Paper, Mondi, said that the paper machines will offer sustainable and 100% recyclable products to converters and brand owners for their retail and online shopping package needs. The papers produced on the machine will have superior strength properties and printability features.
As per latest projections, the European specialty kraft paper market is poised to witness notable growth over the coming years.
