Ministerial Order Issues New Guidelines to Northern Pulp Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Nova Scotia Environment Ministry has published an updated order outlining the terms and conditions to be followed by Northern Pulp Mill while going ahead with previously announced shutdown.

The new order mentions clear guidelines on removal of the leachate and decommissioning of the effluent pipes. As per the order, the company will require to hire a third party professional engineer with extensive experience in decommissioning of wastewater treatment lagoons. This will prevent Northern Pulp from facing a septic condition or similar conditions that may cause an adverse effect. The transition plan has to be submitted to the Department by no later than May 29, 2020.

As per the order, the company is prohibited from removing any portion of the Boat Harbour Effluent Treatment Facility infrastructure, including aerators, until it receives Department’s authorization in writing. Further, the company will have to continue managing wastewater to prevent a septic condition from developing.

Northern Pulp is also required to provide a monthly report with details of all projects carried out during the month that are feared to have potential impacts on the environment. In addition, it is required to submit an annual report on groundwater and surface water monitoring for 2020 by 1st April, 2021.
