Minister Underlined the Urgent Need to Move Towards Greener Steel

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Indian Steel Minister has highlighted the urgent need to move towards green steel, as part of its efforts to establish an environment-friendly industry in the county.

According to the Minister, the steel industry production has surged higher significantly from 22 million tonnes in 1991 to almost 120 million tonnes in 2021-’22. The industry must devise new techniques so as to achieve the output target of 300 million tonnes by 2030 and 500 million tonnes by 2047- the 100th year of independence.

The government is committed to provide adequate policy support to boost domestic production of iron ore and other key steelmaking raw materials. Highlighting the need to move towards green steel, he noted that replacement of coal with hydrogen could deliver significant benefits to the iron and steel industry. This in turn could also reduce the dependence on coal imports, he added.

The Minister, while speaking at the inauguration of the “Making India Atmanirbhar in Steel- Role of Secondary Steel Sector”, hoped that the ideas generated through the conference will guide the government in setting up new policies, aimed at helping the industry navigate the challenges faced by the sector.
