Anglo American Collaborates with Salzgitter on Green Steelmaking

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Anglo American announced that it has reached a memorandum of understanding with Salzgitter Flachstahl to collaborate on decarbonisation of the steelmaking industry. The partnership aims to explore innovative technologies to reduce carbon emissions.

As part of the agreement the two companies will initiate research on using feed materials in natural gas and hydrogen based DRI steelmaking. Furthermore, it will explore possibilities of using significantly less carbon intensive production method, compared to traditional blast furnace process. The primary focus will be on developing hydrogen-based technologies towards enhanced green steel production, it noted.

Peter Whitcutt, CEO of Marketing at Anglo American noted that the collaboration with industry-leading players like Salzgitter Flachstahl will help develop new strategies to drive emissions reduction across the entire steelmaking sector.

Ulrich Grethe, Chairman of the Management Board of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH noted that the project will boost its journey towards low carbon steel production. Incidentally, the company has delivered significant progress on its SALCOS project, which targets switch from coal in blast furnaces to DR steelmaking.
