The dispute centres on compensation and retirement benefits, with the union pressing for higher wages and improved pension provisions. In addition, the union highlighted the difficulties in recruiting and retaining skilled personnel due to staff shortages.
Teck Resources said the eventual effect on production would depend largely on how long the strike continues. The scale of the disruption remains uncertain, and the company has not specified the potential production losses. A prolonged stoppage could create greater production challenges.
In the meantime, the miner reiterated its commitment to reaching a new collective agreement with the union, citing that negotiations remain an important priority for the company. The United Steelworkers had not immediately responded to a request for comment on Saturday.
