Canada Approves Canada Nickel’s Crawford Mine, Boosting Critical Minerals Development

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canada has granted federal approval for Canada Nickel's Crawford polymetallic mining project in Ontario. The decision will help the company move one step closer to a final construction decision.

The approval is expected to boost Canada’s planned critical minerals development projects. It aligns with the Canadian government's broader strategy to accelerate the development of domestic critical mineral projects

The approval was issued by Canada's Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Nature, clearing a major regulatory hurdle under the country's updated Impact Assessment Act. According to the company, Crawford is the first mining project to receive federal approval under this legislation.

With the federal review complete, Canada Nickel will now focus on detailed engineering, project financing and receiving the remaining provincial and federal permits. It must be noted that Canada Nickel has already secured about $2.5 billion in project financing commitments.

The mine is projected to produce 1.6 million tonnes of nickel, along with significant volumes of iron, chrome, cobalt, palladium and platinum. It is expected to use an innovative tailings carbonization system capable of permanently storing up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

Located about 40 kilometres north of Timmins, Ontario, Crawford is considered one of the world's largest undeveloped nickel deposits.
