Mexico is the Leader in Plastic Recycling in Latin America

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): What 2 decades ago was seen as a future problem with a variety of packaging materials is now a reality we can feel with the waste that can affect our environment, from the seas to the streets of cities You can feel the presence of plastic, to mention a few of these materials, and that business group had the impulse to recover making this association one of the most successful PET recycling schemes.

At the Latin American level, Mexico is a leader in the collection and reprocessing of recycled plastics with campaigns sent by ECOCE to society, from different angles, especially in contact with communities from basic education to parents and environmental education. They currently have a long list of activities to drive a change in consumption and awareness of the importance of recycling to care for the planet.

“Twenty years ago, when ECOCEm was created, 8% of PET containers were recovered for recycling, which is equivalent to 8,000 tonnes. Today the recovery percentage is 59%, i.e. out of every 10 containers launched on the market Six recoveries, this puts us as leaders in PET recoveries in the whole of the American continent above Brazil, the United States and Canada and at the same level as the European Union, there are countries that are even higher, such as China Or Germany, but we are the pioneers, “Latin America is in the recycling of packaging and plastics in general,” said Jaime Torres Fidalgo, communications director of ECOCE, in an interview for El Economista.

The task of putting recyclables back on the market has never been easier for those making it possible, thanks to the steady expansion and updating of programs aimed at the separation, collection, transfer and disposal of containers and packaging for their reuse as they have saved over 79,000 tonnes of recyclable material mainly PET, HDPE, aluminium, tinplate, PEBD, BOPP, glass and cardboard.

This collection has given rise to a true post-consumption treatment, which has represented a savings in emissions of 136 million 790 thousand 170 kg of CO2, equivalent to planting 5 million 691 thousand 683 trees or creating 15 Bosques de Chapultepec. According to the estimates of the association.

ECOCE’s work began in 2002, when they began implementing seven programs across the country, among them the Eco Challenge educational collection; institutional educational, social educational, career and sports events; ecorescue; Waste by Pantry/Mobile; flexible motorcycle packaging; As well as fairs and expos, and synergy with companies, associations and institutions.

“ECOCE educational programs have been developed over the course of 20 school cycles, where more than 8,000 schools with approximately 1,800,000 students participated, managing to use 56 million kg of containers and packaging. To date, ECOCE has 32 states has a directory with more than 1,440 collection centers,” said Carlos Sánchez, ECOCE’s general director.
