Scrap Metal Recycling Company to Pay $25K Penalty for Violations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The owners of three closely related Maine companies on River Road have agreed to pay penalty of $25,000 to the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) in settlement of charges for violation of federal environmental rules. Further, the companies have agreed to comply with Clean Water Act.
According to EPA press release, the three companies- Grimmel Industries Inc. in Topsham, Grimmel Industries in Lewiston and Kennebec Scrap Iron Inc in Oakland have agreed to pay the penalty for violations and come in compliance with the law.
The inspections by state and federal EPA authorities had revealed numerous violations of stormwater permit requirements and oil spill prevention regulations. The inspections had revealed that the companies lacked adequate stormwater pollution prevention plans. Moreover, the companies were cited for their failure to conduct proper monitoring, sampling, inspections and training. In addition, Topsham and Lewiston facilities were found to have violated oil spill prevention planning requirements.
Dennis Deziel, EPA New England Regional Administrator noted that the agreement urges the companies to ensure that they will stay vigilant in their compliance in future.
The settlement agreement is subject to a 30-day public comment period and final court approval.
