The controversial scrap metal yard was hit by multiple explosions and fire during mid-May this year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A North Side scrap shredder has agreed to pay $18,000 in fines towards settlement of charges alleging air pollution and explosion at the shredder’s site. The company has also agreed to carryout overhaul of the equipment so as to prevent explosions and air emissions in future. It must be noted that General Iron Industries still awaits a final city approval for its proposal to shift its site from Lincoln Park to south side of the city.

The controversial scrap metal yard was hit by multiple explosions and fire during mid-May this year. Even before the explosion, the city health inspectors had cited the company of as many as 11 instances of emissions, causing pungent smelling. Also, scrap yard residue including pieces of broken metal, plastic and glass were found littering the surroundings of the facility.

Mark Flessner, the city’s chief lawyer noted that the penalty and mitigation measure agreed by the company represents significant steps to ensure protection of lives of local residents, as long as the facility operates in its current location.
