EuRIC Issued Warning Against Imposing Restrictions on Scrap Exports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The trade group EuRIC, which represents recycling businesses throughout Europe, has cautioned against placing any kind of limitations on the export of scrap. It served as a reminder that exports have been crucial in sustaining recycling companies and counterbalancing the region's incredibly low domestic demand for recyclables.

Closing the EU borders for scrap exports will have negative effects on the region's economy and ecology, according to a statement released by EuRIC. Recycling businesses in the area are still seriously threatened by the declining steel and aluminum production. It stated that the European steel and aluminum industry's demands to limit scrap exports are unacceptable and unjustified.

EuRIC argues that protectionism is ineffective in addressing trade issues. Emphasizing the significant contributions made by the EU recycling industry to the region's economy and sustainable development, it encouraged EU officials to maintain the unfettered trading of scrap. Instead of impeding the industry's ability to operate, it urged the administration to support policies that encourage free trade.

In a letter to the European Commission earlier in December 2024, Eurofer and European Aluminum demanded limitations on the region's exports of ferrous and nonferrous scrap.
