EU Aluminum Scrap Exports Surged Amid Hike in U.S. Tariffs

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Increased demand from the United States has led to a notable increase in the European Union's (EU) aluminum scrap exports. In the face of Trump's increased tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, the European metal manufacturers cited a scarcity in their scrap stockpile. However, the region's scrap prices have increased as a result of the growing demand.

In response, the European Aluminum, the trade association representing the entire value chain of the European aluminum industry, urged the EU authorities to impose export duties on scrap. By limiting exports, more scrap can be kept in the area, increasing secondary aluminum production and assisting the EU in meeting its predetermined carbon emission target.

Exports of aluminum scrap from the EU to the US have increased significantly in recent years. The exports increased by 117% to about 7,190 tonnes in 2023 from a total of about 3,319 tonnes in 2022. It should be mentioned that in the first quarter of 2025, the EU exported 345,000 tons of aluminum in total.

Aluminum manufacturers in the EU have voiced concerns that the U.S. administration's 50% tariffs may exacerbate scrap outflows from the area.
