BMW announced its plans to cast 100% wheels from sustainable sources and clean energy by 2024.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading automaker BMW Group announced that it will start using recycled-content aluminum wheels next year. The light-alloy cast wheels made from 70% secondary aluminum will be used in the “new generation” Mini Countryman vehicle. The Group manufactures approximately 10 million light-alloy wheels every year, with 95% of them made from cast aluminum.
BMW announced its plans to cast 100% wheels from sustainable sources and clean energy by 2024. The proposed changes will ultimately lead to 500,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide savings per annum by way of reduction in emissions and materials used during the wheel production process.

The plan comprises of two parts, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process. The first part represents the recent agreement made by BMW with its manufacturing partners to use 100% green energy from the factories that help supply parts. The second part is the increase in use of recycled aluminum.
The combination of 100% green power for production and 70% recycled-content raw material targets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80%, compared to conventional manufacturing processes, noted BMW.
