Aurubis Declared Richmond Multimetal Recycling Plant Expansion

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading multimetal producer and copper recycler Aurubis AG has signed supply contract with Dusseldorf-headquartered plant and machine manufacturer SMS group GmbH for a second plant module at Richmond, Georgia recycling plant- the company’s first multimetal recycling plant in the U.S. The move is considered as the next step forward in the strategic partnership between the two companies in boosting the development of the U.S. non-ferrous metals recycling market.

The additional equipment by the SMS Group at the Richmond facility will increase its capacity from 90,000 tons of complex metal scrap materials per year to almost 180,000 tons per year. The top-blown rotary converter (TBRC) will enable processing of complex recycling materials. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art equipment will also enhance recovery of raw materials like copper, nickel, tin, precious metals and platinum group metals in additional downstream stages, the company press release noted.

The new plant will comply with highest environmental standards and will generate around 200 new jobs.

Roland Harings, CEO, Aurubis noted that the proposed expansion at the new Georgia site will help the company deliver on its ‘Driving Sustainable Growth’ strategy. It will allow Aurubis to take advantage of the enormous potential of the US recycling market, he added.
