SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Lagos, Nigeria state government's ban on specific single-use plastics has caused tensions between local producers and environmentalists. The prohibition went into force on July 1st, 2025.
Local manufacturers claim that the restriction has had a negative effect on producers and small enterprises. The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) Director-General Segun Ajayi-Kadir pleaded with the state government to reevaluate the prohibition. It pointed out that the association was not contacted prior to the announcement of the ban and that the decision was not supported by reliable facts.

The DG pointed out that as almost 90% of the operators in the plastic value chain rely on the sale of single-use plastics as their main source of revenue, the ban could result in the loss of hundreds of jobs.
