Authorities say Parr stole the scrap metal and rebar from CAP LLC on Rustin St. in Sioux City.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A man accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of materials has received a verdict from a jury.
Court documents show 51-year-old Amos Parr was charged with first-degree theft after he stole nearly $100,000 worth of scrap metal and rebar. On Thursday, April 24, a jury convicted Parr of that charge.
Parr’s charge is a Class C Felony, meaning he faces up to 10 years in prison. Online court documents don’t yet show when Parr’s sentencing will be.
Authorities say Parr stole the scrap metal and rebar from CAP LLC on Rustin St. in Sioux City.
“The business took in concrete to recondition it and resell,” wrote Loan Hensley, an assistant Woodbury County attorney, in an affidavit. “[Parr] arranged to have the rebars and scrap metal taken from CAP LLC to Hanner Salvage, where he would sell it.”
Prosecutors said Parr would tell the salvage yard to make the checks out directly to him when they should have been made out to the business. According to the affidavit, Parr cashed these checks at a Sloan bank and kept the money for himself, which eventually added up to $93,000.
Parr reportedly delivered 46 loads of rebar and scrap in 2019, 92 loads in 2020 and 25 loads in 2021. Hensley wrote that Parr was eventually fired in July 2021 after his business partner discovered the theft.
Parr’s defense attorney, Nedu Igbokwe, had previously told KTIV about the relationship between Parr and his business partner, Bradley Cummings.
Igbokwe claimed Cummings tricked Parr into giving Cummings majority control of the company. Once that happened, the defense said Parr went to work for a different company, and his clients followed, leaving Cummings and CAP LLC with less business. Igbokwe said this led to Cummings filing a police report against Parr, which led to criminal charges.
A warrant for Parr’s arrest was served on June 17, 2024, after authorities concluded the rebar and scrap metal sold by Parr belonged to CAP LLC.
