SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The first steel beams manufacturing plant in the Philippines is set to begin operations in 2023, said the company press release by SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp.

The groundbreaking ceremony of the Lemery, Batangas facility was held in 2019. The construction works at the plant got impacted due to Covid-19 restrictions. The construction of steelmaking and steel section rolling production lines got delayed. The facility will have a production capacity of approximately 1.1 million tons and is expected to create nearly 1,500 direct jobs.

The design and supply of equipment, including reheating furnaces, for the project were done by SMS and Fives.

Benjamin O. Yao, President, SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. noted that the Lemery Works steel plant assumes national significance as it will reduce the country’s dependence on imported steel products. The plant will boost recycling of scrap domestically, which in turn will generate local jobs.

Apart from Batangas, SteelAsia also has facilities in Davao, Cebu, Misamis Oriental, and Bulacan. The company plans to put up facilities in Compostela Cebu, Tarlac, and the Quezon Province.
