SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) noted that lack of coordination among officials belonging to security agencies has hampered the fight against smuggling of scrap metal through borders to neighbouring countries.
According to Pamela Ahogo, Acting Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, KRA, the porous borders of the country have allowed criminals to take advantage and control. The agency has already written a letter to the Ministry of Interior to convene a meeting to discuss the issue.
The trade of scrap metal and scrap automotive batteries across the border has been rampant, despite the ban on the export of scrap metal. There must be more coordination between KRA officials and security agencies to put an end to cross-border smuggling of scrap metal, Ahogo said.
At the same time, she praised the efforts of some KRA officials, especially those at the Taita-Taveta border. A couple of weeks back, customs officials at the Taveta border had intercepted two trucks found exporting scrap batteries to neighbouring Tanzania without proper documents.
KRA alone could not stop acts of scrap metal smuggling. The menace can be effectively controlled only through concerted efforts by other agencies as well, it noted.
