Kruger Stopped Newsprint, Specialty Paper and Pulp Production at Brompton Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Kruger Specialty Papers has announced partial shutdown of its Brompton mill in Canada. The decision follows lack of any significant change in unfavourable market conditions, even after a temporary shutdown of nearly six months. The newsprint, specialty papers and pulp production at the mill will be stopped permanently. Meantime, the water treatment plant operations will be unaffected. Also, the company has decided to restart the biomass cogeneration plant at the mill site.

The decision is likely to impact nearly 189 mill employees. The company has decided to set up a reclassification committee to explore various measures to minimize the impact of the shutdown on affected employees. It expressed sincere gratitude to all Brompton mill employees for their dedicated service over the years. Meantime, approximately 25 employees will return to operations, in connection with the biomass plant restart.

The shutdown is expected to reduce Kruger’s annual production by approximately 100,000 mt of newsprint and 70,000 mt of specialty paper.

Earlier in April this year, Kruger had decided to take downtime at the mill for an indefinite period, citing extremely challenging market conditions.

It must be noted that the newsprint production at its Trois-Rivière and Corner Brooke Pulp and Paper mills has not been affected yet.
