Jamaica to Broaden its Ban on Single-Use Plastics

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Jamaican government announced that it will take necessary steps to widen its ban on single-use plastics. The decision is aimed at protecting the country’s natural environment.

The announcement was made by Matthew Samuda, a member of the Senate of Jamaica and is Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation in the Cabinet of Jamaica on the sidelines of the 10th regional session of the Youth Environment Advocacy Programme (YEAP) on ‘Marine Pollution: The Role of Plastics’, held at the York Castle High School in Brown’s Town, St Ann on March 17. The event saw presentations by various agencies.

According to Samunda, the primary aim of the ban is to prevent the entry of non-recyclable, non-biodegradable carcinogenic waste into garbage. The initial targets would be microbeads and plastic lunch boxes. It must be noted that the government had imposed a ban on imports, manufacture and distribution of single-use plastic bags, straws and polystyrene effective 2019.

The Minister urged the students to become ambassadors of environment preservation by organizing education and awareness campaigns on marine pollution due to improper plastic disposal.
