Interpol Alerts on Emerging Criminal Trends in Global Plastic Waste Market

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The international law enforcement agency, Interpol, in its latest report, highlighted that criminal trend in global plastics industry has been on the rise, ever since the imposition of controls by the Chinese administration. The illegal waste shipments have increased considerably over the past two years, the report said.

According to the report titled “INTERPOL’s strategical analysis on emerging criminal trends in the global plastic waste market since January 2018”, there has been an alarming rise in illegal plastic pollution trade, primarily to countries in Southeast Asian regions via multiple transit locations. The surplus of waste in large quantities and the lack of domestic processing capabilities have opened doors for criminal acts in plastic waste export sector.

The report highlights Malaysia as the focal point of illegal activities. There has been a substantial rise in scrap plastic exports to that country, which in turn led to unprecedented jump in the number of unlicensed recycling facilities.

Interpol observed notable rise in notable rise in disposal of the material in illegal landfills and burning of such wastes in countries that used to export plastics to China. Also, plastic waste fires have also increased since then. Surprisingly, many of them were accidental, though some were found to be deliberate.

Furthermore, Interpol foresees risks of further illegal activity in plastic waste trade in the forthcoming months.
