IAI: Global Aluminum Output Held Flat on Year in May

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to production figures published by the International Aluminum Institute (IAI), the global aluminum production totaled 5.43 million metric tons (Mt) in May this year, more or less flat when compared with the production in May 2018.

Region wise, China led the production with a monthly output of around 3.09 Mt. The production remained essentially flat over the previous year. The production by Asian region excluding China totaled 374,000 metric tons. The GCC countries recorded an output of 464,000 metric tons. The production in North America and South America touched 326,000 metric tons and 86,000 metric tons respectively.

The western Europe region produced 293,000 metric tons of aluminum in May this year. The east and central European region recorded an output of 353,000 metric tons. The African aluminum production touched 142,000 metric tons, whereas the production by Oceania region totaled 163,000 metric tons.

Meantime, the latest report released by the Aluminum Association states that the aluminum demand by the U.S. and Canada during the initial four months of 2019 were estimated at around 9.547 million pounds, marginally higher by 0.4% over the previous year. Out of this, demand for semi-fabricated products totaled 6.914 million pounds. The annual rate of primary aluminum production in the U.S. and Canada touched 4.01 million tons in May this year, slightly lower by 0.4% from the April 2019 rate.
