IAI: Aluminum Sector GHG Emissions Dipped Despite Surge in Output

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest data from the International Aluminum Institute (IAI) revealed that aluminum production registered growth. At the same time, the aluminum sector recorded reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The most recent data for 2022 indicates that aluminum production surged higher by 3.9% from 104.1 million tonnes to 108.2 million tonnes. The primary aluminum production soared higher from 67.1 million tonnes in 2021 to 69.0 million tonnes in 2022. The increased output is the result of significant investment by the industry in implementation of latest innovative technologies, IAI data said.

The aluminum sector greenhouse gas emissions recorded marginal decline from 1.13 giga-tonnes to 1.11 giga-tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent. Also, the GHG emissions intensity of primary aluminium production declined by 4.4% from 15.8 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent in 2021 to 15.1 tonnes in 2022.

Commenting on the results, Miles Prosser, Secretary General, IAI noted that aluminum demand is expected to witness significant growth over the decades to come, because of the crucial role played by the metal in global decarbonisation efforts. The data showcases the effectiveness of the industry’s efforts to reduce emissions intensity of aluminum production, he added.
